Secure Contact

Do you need to share a confidential news tip, contact our news desk, or one of our journalists securely? Acme News offers multiple secure contact methods that utilize encryption to ensure confidentiality.

NC Shield Law

It is the policy of Acme News not to disclose the identity of any source or information that could be used to identify a source if confidentiality was promised.

Under North Carolina shield law, our journalists are protected against being compelled to disclose “any confidential or non-confidential information, document, or item obtained or prepared while acting as a journalist.” N.C. Gen. Stat. § 8 53.11(b). Confidential information is any information obtained by a reporter with a promise that the source will not be disclosed. See State v. Wallace, 23 Media L. Rep. 1473 (N.C. Superior Ct. 1995); State v. Hagaman, 9 Media L. Rep. 2525 (N.C. Superior Ct. 1983).

Please note that while Acme News cannot normally be compelled to disclose documents, records, or the identity of a source, without a court order, law enforcement could still subpoena third party services Acme News uses. It is vital if you wish for your communications to remain secure that you only use the contact methods on this page.

Secure contact methods should not be used for press releases and general news tips, only for when you need a secure way to contact a journalist such as whistleblowers or for those who fear retaliation for sharing information.

Session (Secure Chat)

Session is an end-to-end encrypted messenger that minimizes sensitive metadata, designed, and built for people who want absolute privacy and freedom from any form of surveillance.

Session is free to use and does not require any personal information to download, install, or use the app. You can get session at: https://getsession.org/download

PGP Encrypted Email

You can send the news desk an encrypted email using our PGP public key. We recommend Mailvelope which is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. Mailvelope only encrypts the contents (body) of the email not the metadata such as sender, recipient, subject, or timestamps. That metadata remains in the email on both email providers servers making it only good for keeping the contents of what you're sending secure but not that you are sending us emails.

Mail

Sometimes low tech is the best. Sending mail via the US Postal Service can be a secure way to send us confidential tips and documents. Be sure to use a public drop box and not use your mailbox or mailing from a post office.
