WordPress Update Required for Services

Why This Policy Exists—and How It Protects You

To deliver safe, effective, and professional service, we require that all WordPress sites be fully updated before we begin any work.

This includes:

  • The WordPress core

  • All installed plugins

  • All installed themes (even if inactive)

This policy helps protect your site, your business, and our ability to provide reliable support.

Preventing Confusion Around Responsibility

WordPress sites are made up of many moving parts—core files, themes, and plugins—all developed by different teams and updated on their own schedules. When any of these parts are outdated, they can lead to compatibility issues with tools or plugins we need to use, prevent critical functionality (like plugin installation due to an outdated PHP version), break existing features, or expose your site to security risks.

When we begin work on an outdated site, even insignificant changes—like saving a page or enabling/disabling a plugin—can cause unpredictable problems. And when something goes wrong later (due to auto-updates, compatibility issues, or server issues), it's difficult to track down the issue, eating up time and cost for everyone, and easy for the blame to fall on us, even if it wasn't our fault.

By updating everything up front, we start from a stable, secure, known-good state. This reduces the risk of errors, improves project outcomes, and makes it much easier to trace the source of any future issue.

Protecting Your Website's Security

Updates often contain critical security patches. Starting work on a site that isn’t updated could expose it to known vulnerabilities, putting your business and customers at risk. Ensuring your site is up to date allows us to operate in a secure environment.

Ensuring Compatibility and Quality

Many modern tools, themes, and plugins assume you're using current versions of WordPress. If you're not, we may be limited in how we can help, or our solutions might not work as intended. Keeping everything updated ensures we're working in an environment where we can deliver the best results.

Avoiding Excess Fees from Hosts

Some hosting providers, such as IONOS, have extra fees (sometimes more than the monthly hosting fees) for "Extended PHP Support," that they tack on to customer bills.

We will post more about how this is almost a scam later; or email us if you'd like to learn more.

Keeping the website updated avoids these types of extra charges being able to be tacked on to our clients' bills.

Are There Exceptions?

In rare cases, we may agree to work on an outdated site if:

- You’re experiencing an emergency, like a hacked or broken site, and updates aren't possible or would worsen the situation.

- You're requesting a pre-update audit to assess the impact of future updates.- A known plugin or theme conflict makes it safer to delay certain updates until compatibility issues are resolved.
- When common sense applies.

Generally, in most cases at the close of a support ticket we want sites to be fully updated to ensure they are running smoothly with no issues or security vulnerabilities, but that's not always possible. In these cases, we’ll discuss the risks with you in advance and may require written acknowledgment before proceeding.

If Your Site Isn't Updated

If your site isn’t fully updated when work is requested, Acme Solutions will first perform a full backup of your site, update WordPress, plugins, and themes, and ensure the site is stable. This process ensures a secure and compatible environment for our work.

Please note: The time spent performing these updates will be billable.

What You Can Do

To avoid additional costs and delays, we recommend taking the following steps before requesting our assistance:

  • Update WordPress to the latest version.
  • Update all plugins and themes.
  • Verify that your site is functioning correctly after updates.

If you’re unsure how to update your site or are concerned about conflicts, we can provide assistance and can also walk you through it so you know how to do it on your own if you'd like.

By keeping your site current, you’re not just making our job easier—you’re ensuring a more secure, reliable website for your business.
